Instead of hiding your identity and remaining silent, the SGO 2015 wanted to inspire the students at Yeshivah of Flatbush to stand tall for what they believe in to not only be proud Jews in private, but to show the world who we are and what we are made of. The pink of Music is derived from the Oxford Doctor of Music hood used in the 1890s, which was cream brocade with a pink lining. The overarching message and theme was, " When times are tough, what motivates you to stand up?" After all, we live in a world where people are afraid to seem Jewish, to look Jewish and to be Jewish. One of the original eight Faculty colors selected by the Intercollegiate Commission on Academic Costume in 1895. In the upcoming months we came up with our themes, chose generals, created a schedule, and made all of the necessary preparations. We were determined to make Color War 2015 one for the books. Speed will answer the same question posed to the original lecturers: “What would you tell your audience if you had but one lecture to give - your last lecture on this earth?” at the award ceremony on May 17, which will be held at 7 p.m. in De Neve Auditorium. She has published journal articles and book chapters in English and Spanish and is the author of several books including the award-winning “Incarcerated Stories: Indigenous Women Migrants and Violence in the Settler Capitalist State.” She is one of the special advisors on Native and Indigenous affairs for Chancellor Gene Block. Speed, director of the UCLA American Indian Studies Center and a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, is an expert on issues of indigenous autonomy, legal anthropology, human rights, migration and social justice. It was revived in 2010 by the Alumni Scholars Club in collaboration with the UCLA Alumni Association. The tradition dates back more than 60 years, when six notable figures from across campus were invited to share their perspectives and lessons on life. More than 3,500 votes were cast by students to nominate this year’s winning professor. She is the first woman of color and non-STEM person to be recognized with this award.
